Alexa, Are My IoT Devices Secure?

The internet is everywhere, thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT). The term “Internet of Things” applies to any nonstandard computing device that connects to wifi and can transmit data.  Well-known examples of IoT devices include smart speakers like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, smartwatches like the Apple Watch, internet-connected baby monitors, video doorbells, and even toys. However, the convenience these devices offer comes with a price: insufficient security measures, vulnerabilities, and the risk that your data will be compromised. But don’t be alarmed if there’s already an IoT device in your home – we have some tips on how to best use them safely. IoT security issues IoT devices can be inherently insecure due to their easy setup and lax security measures. These devices are usually designed to be used right out of the box with minimal setup, so users often aren’t prompted to set up their own password for the device. In some cases, devices of the same make/model may com...

Does Having a Mish-Mash of Different Manufacturer Devices Matter at All?

Because I am a Techie and a Reviewer, I have a mish-mash of Smart Devices from different manufacturers.  The downside to this is having at least a half-dozen different apps on my phone, with each manufacturer providing its own app.  I have to keep all of these apps to re-configure my devices, as needed, despite the fact I have control integrated through Alexa.  The cheaper the plug, the worse the app, and the generic plugs tend to require more background data than the name brands. In other words, the generic Smart Devices tend to be bandwidth hogs, which is a definite negative if your network is already strained. They also seem to have more connectivity issues, especially when it comes to remote control, (i.e. controlling from an outside Wi-Fi network.)  When I finally find a generic plug and control app that I can recommend, this blog's readers will be the first to hear.  In other words, if your network is already struggling, and you don't like tinkering...

What is Amazon Alexa

Amazon Alexa  is a  voice service,  a cloud-based software program that acts as a voice-controlled virtual personal assistant. In a nutshell, you use your voice to ask Alexa a question or give Alexa a command, and it dutifully answers you (assuming an answer exists) or carries out your request (assuming your request is possible). The key here is that Alexa responds to  voice  commands. So, what can Alexa do? Some people think an Alexa-enabled device is nothing but a glorified clock-radio. And although it’s true that you can use Alexa to tell the time and play a radio station, the limit with what you can do with Alex and  AlexaSpotify   (like apps on mobile devices) is almost nonexistent: Playing media:  You can connect your Alexa device to your favorite music service — such as Amazon Music or Spotify — which gives you voice access to millions of songs. You can ask Alexa to play a particular song, artist, playlist, or ge...
